VILLUPURAM: Six government engineering colleges that were recently started in the State are getting good response from students, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy has said. He was speaking at a function organised at Vadavambalam in Kandamangalam block near here on Saturday. Seats filledContrary to the reports appearing in certain sections of the press that there were few takers to the new engineering colleges, 90 per cent of the seats had been filled through counselling, he said. He gave a break-up of the seats filled as follows: Villupuram Government Engineering College – 205, Tindivanam – 203, Ariyalur – 204, Thirukkuvalai – 191, Ramanathapuram – 202 and Panruti – 193. Of the total number of 79,375 engineering seats available across the State, 24,901 had been filled and the remaining would be filled through counselling that is expected to continue till August 9, Mr. Ponmudy said. The government had so far spent Rs. 250 crore for the welfare of workers in 24 unorganised sectors, Mr. Ponmudy said. He also distributed 5.4 lakh house site pattas. In the fourth phase of the free colour television sets scheme, the government would procure 40 lakh sets.
