BERHAMPUR: Large number of illegal arms including country guns and pistols has made entry into Ganjam district during past one year. Recently police arrested Rabi Jena, an illicit gun trader from Sahaspur village. During interrogation he claimed that he had sold more than 500 pistols and guns in Ganjam district during recent past. As per him his customers were mostly bootleggers, grass root level politicians and professional criminals. It is suspected that there must be few more illicit fire arms dealers in Ganjam district, which means thousands of illegal arms have reached the district. But sources say the illegal gun buyers in Ganjam district have been till date interested in small arms especially pistols, which are either China made or country made. Ganjam police has recently started a special operation to track down the fire arms sold by arrested Rabi and the persons who bought them. As the fire arms have fallen into the hands of professional criminals its impact has started to show off. Several persons have started to get shot dead in a professional manner during past few months. Around eight persons were eliminated during past three months in areas like Bhanjanagar, Polasara, Chatrapur, Dharakote, Aska of Ganjam district.
