BJP delegation meets L-G over crime situation

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI:Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi on Saturday led a delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs to Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna and submitted a memorandum complaining of “deteriorating” law and order situation in the Capital. It urged Mr. Khanna to ensure that the police curb street crime with a heavy hand.

Gang wars

The delegation expressed concern at “the sharp rise in cases of dacoity and murder in Delhi during the last few months” and charged that criminals and organised gangs had concentrated their presence in certain parts of the city.

It also raised the issue of how gang wars have shocked the citizens and created a deep sense of insecurity. Moreover, use of illegal weapons in gang wars had shown that Delhi had become a “mandi” (market) for such weapons, it added.

Inefficiency

Prof. Mukhi wondered why the police so far had not been able to smash the gangs or seize weapons when cases of criminal activities were taking place in Delhi.

He charged that it was due to the inefficiency of top police officers that the city had for the past five years been holding the dubious distinction of reporting the maximum number of criminal cases among the 35 major cities of the country.

The BJP leader also accused the Delhi police of seeking to suppress the actual crime figures by not registering FIRs in most cases. Such an approach had emboldened the criminals and people were suffering, he said.

During the past few months, the delegation said, biker gangs had left citizens terrified by striking at will. Police action had been confined mainly to erecting barricades on busy roads during peak hours leading to huge traffic jams rather than helping to put these gangs behind bars.

‘Convene meeting’

The delegation urged the L-G to convene a meeting of Union Home Ministry officials, Delhi Police, and senior police officers from neighbouring States to formulate a policy for curbing crime with a firm hand.
