TACT appeal to Govt. for compensation

Staff Reporter

Power cuts hit small and micro industrial units

The losses range from Rs. 400 to Rs. 1,500 a day

in the form of wages

Power cuts have also led to machines

developing snags

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Micro Enterprises (TACT) has appealed to the Chief Minister to compensate small, cottage and micro industrial units through District Industries Centre (DIC) for the losses suffered in the last nine months owing to frequent power cuts.

In a memorandum, district president J. James and general secretary P. Ramesh said the State Government should direct the DIC to enumerate the number of industrial units and compensate them for the losses ranging from Rs. 400 to Rs. 1,500 a day in the form of wages.

Similarly, the association also pleaded that small and micro industrial units that used 25 Horse Power (HP) connections and those using 100 HP connections for further distribution to smaller units should be exempted from power holiday. The Government should support small, medium and big industrial units for captive power generation through furnace oil and this would help in saving nearly 1,000 mega watt power. TACT also pointed out that nearly 20,000 industrial units in Coimbatore survive with private financing in the absence of any assistance from the Government either in the form of schemes or subsidy or grants-in-aid. These industries were surviving on the basis of job orders from various major industrial units.

Under the circumstances, the unscheduled power cuts in the last nine months had resulted in the functioning of these industries for four to six hours a day. Such power cuts also led to machines developing snags. With mounting losses, the industrial units were borrowing from private institutions and funding agencies. The TACT had staged a demonstration and picketing in this connection.
