CHENNAI: India is inching towards adopting best safety practices in the oil sector, but has miles to go in achieving the best standard, Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary and Chairman, Safety Council, M.S. Srinivasan, said here on Friday. Presenting Oil Industry Safety Awards for 2007-2008 to oil majors at a function organised by the Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD), Mr. Srinivasan said safety should not be compromised. India would achieve the best standard and soon become a role model. Stating that OISD has done a good job over the last 22 years, he said, “It is of paramount importance to design, evolve and disseminate safety standards for hydrocarbon industry either for production, refinery, marketing or transmission activities. .” Indian Oil Corporation bagged three awards -- best performance in refinery and POL marketing organisation categories and second best performance in cross country pipelines category. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation bagged two awards – best performance in LPG marketing organisation and lube oil blending organisation categories. GAIL bagged two awards – best performance in cross country pipelines and other processing organisation categories. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation bagged the best award in oil and gas assets category and Bharat Petroleum Corporation for second best performance in refinery category.
