CPI(M) meeting begins

KOLKATA: In the background of the expulsion of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from the party, the sixth session of the CPI(M) State committee began here on Saturday in the presence of general secretary Prakash Karat. Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu also attended the meeting.
Both Mr. Karat and Mr. Basu declined to give any comment, to waiting journalists, on Mr. Chatterjee’s expulsion.
In a statement, the party said CPI(M) State secretary Biman Bose gave his assessment of the West Bengal panchayat election results. The session stressed Left unity.
