Mathews cleared for Olympics

NEW DELHI: The faith of the boxers, Akhil Kumar in particular, about the Indian sporting system was restored, as physiotherapist Heath Mathews was cleared by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to accompany the squad for the Olympics.

The South African physiotherapist had played a significant role in the recovery and rehabilitation of Akhil and he had expressed his anguish that such a key member of the support staff was missing from the 42-member list of officials.

“The Indian Boxing Federation thanks the IOA for having acceded to our request of including the World-class physiotherapist. The wonderful gesture will certainly pay rich dividends in India’s quest for a podium finish for the pugilists at the Beijing Games,” the Secretary General of the IABF, Col. P.K. Muralidharan Raja, said.

The Indian team, training in Patiala, is scheduled to reach Delhi on July 31 and leave for Beijing in the early hours of August 2.

National coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu, Cuban coach B.I. Fernandez and manager Khoibi Salam will accompany the five-member team apart from Mathews.
