Athletes felicitated

Chennai: Tamil Nadu athletes, who won the overall championship at the National Combined Events and Jumps Championships held at Bangalore on July 18 and 19, were felicitated here on Saturday by the Tamil Nadu Athletic Association. Of the eight gold, six silver and five bronze medallists, seven were present at the felicitation, the others away at a national camp.

The Bangalore event comprised heptathlon, decathlon, and the four jumps — long jump, high jump, triple jump and pole vault, in the categories men, women, and boys and girls in the age groups under-20, under-18 and under-16.

B. Azaruddin, who bagged gold in both long jump and triple jump in the boys under-18 category, was one of the stand-out performers.

W.I. Davaram, President of TNAA, said that while only Anju Bobby George of the nineteen medalists would be at Beijing, the others were still young and had time on their side to represent India at, and win medals in, future Olympics. He made special mention of K. Ananthi, who had won the under-18 girls high jump at Bangalore, and said that he believed she could break the national record soon.

TNHA office-bearers

M. Ramasubramani and A. Saravanan have been elected president and general secretary respectively of the Tamil Nadu Handball Association at its AGM at Madurai. Ishari K. Ganesh has been made the Patron.
