Pratibha, PM condemn blasts

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Saturday condemned the serial blasts in Ahmedabad. They appealed to the people to remain calm and preserve communal amity and peace.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also strongly condemned the blasts, saying there was a “conspiracy” to destabilise the country and fuel communal disturbances.

“Coming so soon after the blasts in Jaipur and Bangalore, it is clear that there is a conspiracy to destabilise the country and create communal disharmony,” the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said here.

Expressing sympathies with those affected by the serial explosions, the party said it was “unfortunate that despite a series of such attacks, the government and the intelligence agencies are unable to crack down on those responsible for these heinous crimes.”

Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta was in touch with top Gujarat government officials. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Shakeel Ahmed said the Home Ministry had issued a nationwide high alert on Friday in the wake of the blasts in Bangalore, adding that the State government should have been more alert and alive to the potential threat. He assured the State government of all possible help by the Centre.
