Airport shareholders to stage dharna

NEDUMBASSERY: The Cochin International Airport Share Holders’ Organisation will stage a dharna on Tuesday at Athani Junction near here to press their demands, including an inquiry into the alleged allotment of shares to members of the board of directors.

At a press conference here on Saturday, the leaders of the organisation alleged misuse of power by the director board members and the first managing director in allotting the shares divested by the State government.

They said the decision to offload 25 per cent of the total 51 per cent stake by the State government benefited the members of the director board only.

They said that as against the initial decision of the board that five per cent of these shares would be allotted to the labourers working in the airport, the entire lot of shares was allotted to some ‘benami’ buyers. They said these shares should have been allocated to the 12,500 existing stake holders. The leaders warned the CIAL authorities that the organisation would conduct an agitation if they failed to resolve the issues. The other demands raised by the organisation include: realising the amount that Air India was to pay to the CIAL, resolution of the dispute between HUDCO and the CIAL and reintroduction of users’ fee from the passengers. The vice-president of the organisation A.K. Nazeer, general secretary Devassi Kutty Padayattil and joint secretary C.N. Divakaran Pillai participated in the press conference.
