Scrutinise executive, Ansari urges Elders

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Hamid Ansari on Saturday called upon members to exercise their right to scrutinise the activities of the executive, making use of all tools available with them to raise issues in the House.

Inaugurating a two-day orientation programme for newly elected and nominated members, Mr. Ansari said when members disrupted the proceedings, particularly during question hour, the executive would become the greatest beneficiary.

While lamenting the decline in the deliberative role of Parliament, the Chairman advised the members to use the instrumentalities of rules and procedures to the maximum, instead of riding roughshod in moments of excitement.

Deputy Chairman K. Rahman Khan said that with India growing in stature, the proceedings of Parliament were being closely watched by international media.
