This Day That Age
Mr. Harold Macmillan, the British Prime Minister, in a letter to Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Prime Minister, published in London on July 26, suggested the Security Council should make arrangements for a special meeting which heads of Governments could attend. He said this work could begin “without delay” in close consultation with Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, United Nations Secretary-General. In Paris, Gen. Charles de Gaulle told the Soviet Government he was “quite ready to proceed without delay in the preparation of a Summit Conference and to take part in it with the heads of Governments.” Gen. De Gaulle said it would be preferable if the meeting were held in Europe, preferably Geneva.
