Thiruvananthapuram: The annual Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapy (sukha chikitsa) for elephants attached to temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) will commence here on Monday morning. TDB president C.K. Guptan and members P. Narayanan and P.K. Sumathikutty Amma will formally inaugurate the annual event at Sreekanteswaram Temple. Devaswom Commissioner P.V. Nalinakshan Nair and other senior Devaswom officials are scheduled to participate in the function. Three pachyderms, namely Sreekanteswaram Sivakumar, Ulloor Karthikeyan and Chengalloor Dakshayani, will line up at Sreekanteswaram Temple to receive the medicated food that constitutes the therapy. Over the next few days, as many as 40 elephants under various temples from Neyyatinkara to North Paravur would be administered the therapy, a spokesman for TDB said here on Sunday. As for humans, the sukha chikitsa is usually administered to elephants during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam because of the conducive climate. The ayurvedic formulations are mixed with the food normally given to elephants. The elephants at temples administered by the TDB have been receiving the therapy for several years.
