Hike PRSS interest

The National Savings Institute has appealed to the salaried employees to join the regular and automatic savings scheme under Pay Roll Savings Scheme (PRSS) by authorizing the employers to deduct fixed amount from their salaries every month and deposited in post-office/bank for a period of five years at a fixed rate of interest. Though this is a convenient scheme for the benefit of employees, it may be mentioned here that such recurring deposits accrue only a nominal rate of interest and so unattractive. The NSI should offer a slightly higher rate of interest in PRSS to attract the attention of salaried class.

Unfair burden

The APSRTC has been collecting an additional Re. 1 from each passenger consequent on the opening of the flyover bridge at the Convent Junction. It recently decided to increase the additional charge to Rs.2 from each passenger which is not justified. We are told that even with a Re.1 hike, the APSRTC stood to gain a lot as it pays only Rs.60 per bus a day towards toll gate fee. However, APSRTC is getting about Rs. 200 per bus making four trips on routes numbers like 400 and 99, according to a survey. This additional burden on passengers is unwarranted. In view of this, I appeal to the APSRTC to immediately reduce the additional charges collected in the name of toll-gate fee to Re.1 which was initially collected.

Double standards

Recently, I visited an outlet of a nature cure organization in Lawson’s Bay which markets organic rice and other provisions, dry fruits and honey. The organization discourages use of plastic carry bags and asks the customers to bring their own non-plastic traditional bags to carry provisions back home. I was thrilled by the suggestion. However, my joy was short-lived when I found the same outlet marketing honey in low grade unsafe plastic bottles. Such practice should be discouraged.

Need for flyover

The NAD Kotha Road junction is becoming busier and busier with increasing traffic. During peak hours, there is congestion of traffic at the junction. With the increasing vehicular traffic and keeping in view of future requirements, there is an urgent need to construct a spacious flyover at the NAD Junction for free flow of traffic.
