Sir, — Teaching children in a language other than their mother tongue is harmful to their understanding of the subject. Even intelligent children may find it difficult to learn a foreign language. Any language can be learnt anytime during one’s life. Forcing the primary schoolchildren to learn a foreign language may result in large dropouts, especially in rural areas. Hence, I appeal to parents to ensure that their children get their primary education in their mother tongue. P. Basavaiah, Chitradurga For safetySir, — Today, we are witnessing many road accidents, especially near schools and colleges. Students are often injured and sometimes even lose their lives while crossing roads. I request every school to collect Rs. 1 a month towards a police development fund and hand it over to the Police Department. The schools can, in turn, request the police to post one or two personnel at the schools who will help children cross the roads safely. Srividya. R. Shastry, Bangalore StreetlightsSir, — Even as the Minister for Energy Eswarappa was speaking on the floor of the Legislative Assembly about seeking more power from the Centre, the streetlights in Mysore Bank Colony were on at about 4.30 p.m. They were on till almost 9 a.m. the next day. Although I tried to bring it to the notice of BBMP officials, none of the landlines or cellphones responded. I had to ultimately contact corporation commissioner Subrahmanya. This may not be a stray incident as the streetlights are on during day in many areas. The authorities should take steps to stop this practice. D.N.
