PUDUKOTTAI: The two-day ‘Mega mela’ conducted simultaneously at all police sub-divisions in the district has helped resolve a total of 356 petitions that were pending for a long time. Six teams of officials processed the pending petitions in the presence of the respective petitioner and the ways and means for immediate redress on the spot were worked out. The success of the maiden ‘mela’ held last week to resolve the pending petitions in Pudukottai town encouraged the police administration to extend the programme to all the stations in the district. While 252 petitions were disposed off on Saturday, the grievances of the 104 petitioners were redressed on Sunday. “Those who had applied for passport are the largest beneficiaries; as many as 175 persons, who were awaiting the clearance from the police department for a few months, got it on the spot in the past two days,” the Superintendent of Police, P. Moorthi, said. For sub-divisions with a fairly large number of police stations under its jurisdiction, the mela was held at different places within the sub-division. For instance, the mela was held for the petitioners from the Iluppur, Annavasal and Viralimalai stations in the Keeranur sub-division was held at Iluppur on Saturday, while the petitioners from other stations had their grievances redressed at the second day of the ‘mela’ held at Keeranur.
