More buses needed

After the announcement about the conversion of the existing metre gauge rail line into broad gauge in the Dindigul-Coimbatore section in 2005-06, train services to Coimbatore on this section were suspended from May 2006 and the trains were terminated at Podanur.

There are a number of passengers travelling from Udumalpet to Coimbatore during peak hours in the morning and the evening.

It is reliably learnt that all existing trains in the Palani-Podanur section will be shortly suspended.

Though Palani-Coimbatore buses touch Udumalpet, passengers who board the buses at Udumalpet have to stand on the footboards during peak hours.

The broad gauge conversion is likely to materialise only in 2010. Therefore, the transport department should immediately arrange to run at least 20 buses between Udumalpet and Coimbatore from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at regular intervals of 10 minutes.

Power supply

Instead of disrupted power supply and zonal system for industrial units, undisrupted power should be given to industries in the day, suspending power supply to residents. Similarly, in the night residents should get undisrupted power, excluding the industrial units.

This way the power supply can be adjusted equally for both the residential and industrial consumers.

Waste management

I refer to the news item ‘Waste management plan needed, says Association’ (July 24).

As pointed out by the Public Awareness Association, waste management is one of the issues which needs to be tackled on a war footing in this hill station.

Now that the matter has been brought to the notice of the District Collector one hopes it will receive the immediate attention of those concerned. Meanwhile, it will be helpful if pamphlets explaining the ‘dos and don’ts’ are distributed among the public.

Neglected park

Kamaraj Park in Kundah, which was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, has not been maintained properly by the Electricity Board for the last few years.

K. Kamaraj, when he was Chief Minister, had a power house constructed here.

It is not being maintained by the Board. Mr. Kamaraj was instrumental in establishing elementary schools in all remote villages of the state.

But we have conveniently forgotten his contributions.

Ration shop woes

People from all walks of life go to ration shops and stand in queue for long under the scorching sun.

Facility to attend nature’s call should be provided to these people.

Reserved sites

The government has joined hands with real estate promoters and left house site owners in the lurch.

Panchayats have not taken any step to recover the sites from the promoters.

In Veerakeralam and Vadavalli panchayats more than 200 layouts were sanctioned.

Only a few sites have been recovered and put to use for public causes as specified in the layout.

They have paid the cost of the common sites added on to their sites.

The cost of the reserved sites will go up to crores of rupees.

Indeed it is a heavy loss for the site owners who were deprived of their rights.

Will the dynamic new Collector take steps to restore their rights?

Regularise train

It is disappointing to find that there is no mention in the recently-published Southern Zonal Railway Time Table about the Coimbatore-Shoranur Junction special MEMU service (leaving Coimbatore junction at 9 a.m. and reaching from Shoranur in the afternoon).

It has been operated as a ‘special train’ for more than two years by Southern Railway.

It is utilising the rakes of Palakkad Town-Coimbatore passenger.

This train from Coimbatore junction to Shoranur junction (except Sundays) is very popular among various categories of people.

It will be helpful to more people if it finds mention in the time table. Southern Railway should regularise the MEMU service.
