PUDUCHERRY: Security has been beefed up in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions following the serial blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Director-General of Police A.S. Khan told The Hindu that though there was no specific threat alert for the Union Territory, all precautionary measures had been taken. Mobile patrol teams had been told to concentrate on sensitive areas, including religious places. The police was also watching the activities of banned organisations, especially in Karaikal region, a senior officer said. Following direction from District Collector G. Thevaneethi Dhas, officials from the Revenue Department on Sunday conducted surprise checks at all cracker manufacturing units to ascertain whether the stocks were maintained properly. Three cracker units and one explosives manufacturing unit at Ariankuppam were sealed as they had gone defunct owing to various reasons, an official said. Cuddalore, VillupuramSecurity has been tightened at commercial centres, places of worship and vital installations in Cuddalore and Villupuram following the direction of Deputy Inspector-General of Police E.Ma. Masanamuthu and Superintendents of Police A. Amalraj (Villupuram) and Pradip Kumar (Cuddalore). Night patrolling has been intensified and vehicle checks are being conducted at road intersections. Dog squads have been deployed in major bus stands and railway stations. The police personnel are also watching all lodges and hotels.
