Dip in II pre-university supplementary pass results

Staff Reporter

Percentage has fallen to 21.97 from last year’s 25.11

Bangalore: The pass percentage in the second year pre-university supplementary examination has been put at 21.97, compared to 25.11 last year.

The supplementary examinations were conducted from June 30 to July 9 at 309 centres. Evaluation was taken up at 13 centres in Bangalore from July 12 to 23. 5,139 examiners were involved in the exercise.

According to a communiqué from the Department of Pre-University Education, of the 2.75 lakh students who appeared for the examination, only 60,625 have passed.

Candidates from rural areas have outperformed their urban counterparts. Of the 67,093 rural candidates who wrote the examination, 15,884 passed; while only 44,741 urban students of the total 2.08 lakh cleared it.

Though fewer in number, girls have fared better than boys in the supplementary examinations.

While 32,038 of the 1.69 lakh boys who appeared for the examination have passed, 28,587 of the 1.06 lakh girls managed to clear their pending papers.

Dakshina Kannada district has topped the list by securing a pass percentage of 41.03, followed by Udupi (37.23) and Chikmagalur (33.41). The last three positions are held by Gulbarga (16.29), Raichur (14.6) and Bidar (12.63).

The communiqué also said that candidates who wrote the examination in Kannada have fared better than those who did it in English. The pass percentage of Kannada medium candidates is 22.76, while that of the English medium students stood at 20.94. Commerce students have fared better than Arts and Science students. The pass percentage in the Commerce stream is 25.74, Arts stream 22.81 and Science stream 18.21.

S.G. Hegde, Commissioner, Department of Pre-University Education, said that the trend of students scoring badly due to the multiple choice question system in SSLC examinations was evident even in the supplementary examination.

“A few teachers admitted that students were not taking first PU examination seriously. The poor results reflected that trend too. Hopefully, the new PU guidelines will help bring students on the right track and improve the pass percentage,” he said.
