School textbooks not available: Mukhi

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Claiming that students of Class I to VIII of government and aided schools were facing problems in getting their textbooks, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi on Sunday said the Chief Minister should re-consider the new policy adopted by the Education Department.

In a letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said the Education Department had recently made changes in its distribution policy that was adopted in 1970. “While the students are in a dilemma, the teachers and principals have been engaged for transportation of textbooks. Thirty thousand students studying in government and aided schools have not received textbooks. I want the Chief Minister to ensure that students of Class I to VIII of government and aided schools must get their textbooks within one week.”

Pointing out that the Delhi Government’s earlier distribution policy did not lead to any shortage of textbooks for students, Prof. Mukhi said: “The State Government was getting its books published through the Delhi Bureau of Textbooks in Janakpuri from Class I and VIII and then distributing them in its 28 zones through its authorised wholesale distributors. These distributors were successfully distributing textbooks in government and aided schools across the city at a very meagre commission of 5 per cent. During this distribution policy no shortage of books in Delhi was ever noticed.”

Prof. Mukhi said only rec-ently the Department issued an order that the principals and authorised teachers sho- uld personally collect textbo-oks from Delhi Bureau of Te-xtbooks for their schools and disburse them on their own.
