Initiative to provide coaching for children after school hours defended ‘Textbook shortage solved long ago’ DAVANGERE: Commissioner of Public Instruction Kumar Naik has instructed Deputy Directors of Public Instruction working at district headquarters and Drawing Officers at district and taluk level to ensure that teachers are paid their salaries by the fifth of every month. He said that any undue delay in payment of salaries would not be tolerated and stringent action would be taken against the officers who failed to make the payments on time. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Naik said that the Education Department had been computerised. He instructed the Drawing Officers at district level and taluk level and Gram Panchayat level to submit the list well in advance to ensure that teachers in their jurisdiction get their salary on time. The Government had allocated a sum of Rs. 4,500 crore to the department and there was no dearth of funds to pay the salaries of the teachers, he added. He said that he had asked the headmasters and teachers of the schools to get their official work done after school hours. Stern action would be taken against the officer concerned if he withheld the salaries or any other bills of teachers without a valid reason, he said. Mr. Naik defended the initiative by the department to provide coaching for children who lag behind in classes, for one hour after the school hours. There was no other way to bring these children on a par with other children. He said that teachers had to toil for one hour after school hours but they would not mind it as most of them were concerned about the children. Mr. Naik said that the children would not be burdened by the coaching and added that he had introduced such a scheme to improve them academically. To a question, Mr. Naik claimed that textbooks were available in all the places and the textbook scarcity had been solved long ago. The department would recruit over 11,000 primary school teachers and 5,500 high school teachers soon, he added.
