KARUR: The State Government was considering proposals to provide eggs thrice a week to the inmates of orphanages, homes for the mentally ill and homes for the hearing impaired, according to Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan. Speaking after inspecting the home for the mentally ill at Manavadi near here recently, the Minister said that proposals have been drafted for providing eggs thrice a week for the inmates of orphanages, homes for the mentally ill, special schools for the hearing impaired, etc. on the lines of the noon meal scheme. Already the department had received petitions seeking extension of the provision for such homes and the State Government was seriously considering extension of the facility to the special homes. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was seized of the matter and the State Government would sympathetically consider the proposals, she added. Mrs. Geetha Jeevan directed the Collector T.N. Venkatesh to provide skill development training facilities to mothers of the inmates of the home for the mentally ill children at Manavadi. The State Government has sanctioned Rs.5 lakh for constructing new building for the Manavadi home for the mentally ill. The Minister stressed that early detection of mental illness among children and new born would help in a big way in the normal growth of such children. Marriage among close relatives should be avoided and carrying women should consume nutritious food for safe and normal delivery and also for ensuring the regular growth of the child in womb. The Minister also visited Home for the deaf and dumb run by “Anabalayam” at Thanthonrimalai.Apart from Mr. Venkatesh, the District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer Shyamala, Karur RDO Jayaraman and other officials accompanied the Minister during the visit.
