BANGALORE: The Bangalore police have detained several persons for questioning following the bomb blasts that rocked the city on Friday even as they exude confidence that a breakthrough in the case will be achieved shortly. “Many persons are being questioned and we are in the process of gathering information from them. The investigations are progressing satisfactorily,” Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari told presspersons here on Sunday. He, however, refused to divulge information on the number of people arrested or their association with certain organisations. He said: “We do not want to blame any organisation for the blasts before the investigation is completed.” Mr. Bidari said samples collected at the sites were sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory. Some samples were taken by a team from the National Security Guards. Asked whether there were similarities in the blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, Mr. Bidari said they were awaiting details from their counterparts in Gujarat about the type of explosives used in Ahmedabad on Saturday. The police have found that the explosives used in Bangalore and Channapatna were similar. The Channapatna police have recovered 7 kg of ammonium nitrate-based explosive material from the blast site. Though the explosion took place on Thursday, no alert was sounded in Ramanagaram district or in the State. Director General and Inspector General of Police R. Sri Kumar, who visited the blast sites in the city on Sunday, said the police were examining the explosive material recovered in Channapatna on Thursday. Personnel of the bomb squad had a busy schedule on Sunday after calls about suspicious objects placed in three places were reported to the police. While public reported suspicious objects at K.C. General Hospital and J.P. Nagar, the police found a packet of crackers in Garuda Mall during a routine check. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Sunday ordered appointment of Upendra Tripathy, Principal Secretary (Transport) as Principal Secretary (Home). Mr. Tripathy will hold concurrent charge of the Transport Department.
