Thimmappiah no more

Bangalore: The doyen among Karnataka cricketers, K. Thimmappiah, 92, passed away here on Sunday. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son.

Thimmappiah played for Mysore, as Karnataka was then known as in the 1940s.

He played 10 Ranji Trophy matches, scored 403 runs with a highest individual score of 127 against Madras, as Tamil Nadu was then known in 1942.

Incidentally he also made his Ranji debut against Madras on December 14, 1940.

Born on February 21, 1916, Thimmappiah played first class cricket in a career spanning from 1940 to 1953.

Incidentally he was the manager of the Indian junior team during its tour of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in the 1963-64 season. He was also the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association from 1990 to 1998.
