Manikandan shines in SCE’s win

Karaikudi: Manikandan’s 88 helped Shanmuganathan College of Engineering (Pudukottai) defeat Raja’s College of Engineering (Madurai) by 84 runs and enter the quarterfinals of the Anna University Zone IX inter-Collegiate cricket tournament, here on Sunday.

The scores: Second round: Shanmuganathan CE (Pudukottai) 193 for seven in 25 overs (Rajkumar 35, Manikandan 88) bt Raja’s CE (Madurai) 109 in 21.3 overs (Prabu three for nine); Sethu IT (Kariapatti) 231 for six in 25 overs (Silambarasan 31, Umer 41, Nageshkumar 56) bt Seethai Ammal EC (Sivagangai) 71 in 16.3 overs (Balakumar 31, Umer four for 11, Suresh three for 18); Mohamed Sathak CE (Kilakarai) 99 for nine in 25 overs (Prakash three for 26) lost to Sudharsan CE (Pudukottai) 101 for six in 22.1 overs (Karthikeyan 32); Mount Zion CE (Pudukottai) 126 for seven in 25 overs (Bovas 86) lost to MNSK CE (Pudukottai) 159 for three in 22.2 overs (Karthik 50 n.o., Ganesh Kumar 49); PSNA CE (Dindigul) 75 in 19.1 overs (George Prakash three for 14) lost to Syed Ammal EC (Ramanathapuram) 76 for six in 23.5 overs (Hemnath 32); KLN CIT (Pottapalayam) 146 for five in 25 overs (Arun Prakash 48 n.o.) bt PTR CE (Madurai) 108 in 24 over (Murugesan three for 15).

Anbarasan wins

At Madurai, S. Anbarasan of KLN College of Engineering won the under-25 title in the district-level chess tournament, organised by the Meenakshi Chess Centre of Vajpayee Charitable Trust.

Final placings: U-25: 1. S. Anbarasan 4; 2. S. Jayaprakash (SVN College) 4; 3. S. Balachandran (SVN College) 3.5. U-12: 1. B. Hema (KV School) 5; 2. V. Sanjeev (Lakshmi School) 4; 3. K. Office-bearers

At Courtalam, Dr. S. Cletus Babu, Chairman, SCAD Engineering College, Cheranmahadevi, Tirunelveli District and R. Sadacharam of Madurai have been elected president and secretary respectively for the Tamil Nadu Football Association for the next two years (2008-2010) at its AGM on Sunday.

Football league

MAM takes title

At Tiruchi, host MAM CE defeated JJ CET 2-0 to win the title in the Anna University zone-8 inter-collegiate football tournament. Toter Angu and Santosh were the scorers.

The results: Final: MAM CE bt JJ CET 2-0; Third place: PAB CET 6 bt Jayaram CET 0; Semifinals: MAM bt Jayaram CET 5-0; JJ bt PAB CET 1-0.
