BERHAMPUR: Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the establishment of first government engineering college in south Orissa at Sitalapalli near the city. This proposed institution would be a constituent institution of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT). It would also be the fourth State government managed engineering college in the State. It would be named “Parala Maharaja Engineering College’ (PMEC) in honour of the royal family of Paralakhemundi which played a major role in the formation of modern Orissa State on linguistic basis. As per an estimate the State government is expected to invest around Rs. 100 crore for the establishment of this institution. The BPUT has started the process to get the institute approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The institute is expected to start intake of students from the academic year 2009-10. It would start with four disciplines having a strength of 60 students in each department. The Ganjam district administration has handed over 10 acres near Sitalapalli village on the outskirts of the city . Another 50 acres of land would be handed over to the institution in near future by the administration. The State government has already sanctioned Rs. 2.5 crore for the construction work , said B.K. Behera, the chief engineer of State Works Department. According to him the construction work is expected to start from October. The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of BPUT has already submitted the architectural design of the new institution to the Works Department. Hectic tourThe Chief Minister had air dashed to Sitalapalli by a helicopter in the morning. He was on a hectic tour of Ganjam district. He attended several other foundation stone laying ceremonies and inaugural functions of different projects in Shergada, Hinjli and Purushottampur blocks.
