Fight naxalism

Two back-to-back attacks by naxalites stunned the State in which more than 50 police personnel were killed. Naveen Patnaik government made a customary statement that efforts were on to strengthen security forces and additional unit of paramilitary units had been sought from the Centre.

There seems to be little intensity in following up the naxalites, who only mean violence. Mr. Patnaik, who is himself in charge of the Home Department, did not say a harsh word against his intelligence chief.

Although security experts had been repeatedly saying that intelligence failure was the main reason behind growing number of attacks, there should have been a departmental overhaul in view of the failure.

What is more pathetic is that the intelligence chief, is tipped to be the next Director General of Police. Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have successfully chased these ultras from their territory using force and preparing strategic plan. State government appears to be lacking the fire to fight these CPI (Maoist) cadres.

Poor show

Senior batsmen appeared in the scene and India slid to its old place.

The way India lost to Sri Lanka in the first test at Colombo, it is a shame for everybody. Those who are singularly responsible for the debacles were batsmen, particularly the big fours Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman. From now on, only Sachin should be allowed to play for India in order to facilitate him to earn the distinction of highest run getters of the world in test cricket. Otherwise, the techniques of Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman have become outdated when it comes to playing to spins of Mendis and Muralidharan.

At least the young players had the guts to attack the two brilliant bowlers and dislodge from their comfort zones. But these big batsmen of India proved to be a disaster. Ganguly cannot be blamed as he had never possessed the technique to play as a batsman. But the way Sachin, Dravid and Laxman played it is pathetic.

Go ahead with reforms

Finally UPA government gave the answer to Left it deserved. The Left parties had taken the UPA government for ransom for the last four years and preventing the government to take any forward-looking policy steps. The communists live in medieval era and do not want to come out. Left leaders will be very happy if their cars would be pulled by cart. They will reason out that the farmers will get benefits even if they would continue to enjoy the luxury of the car.

Left leaders have long been practicing the concept.

Has anybody ever seen a senior Left leader coming by a train. No, they are using the private airlines frequently. Initially these are the people who opposed the idea of giving access to private players in the air-transport.

Similarly, entry of private players in the telecom sector was opposed by the Left leaders but they are enjoying the mobile phones at cheaper rate. Now they are opposing foreign companies in the insurance sector and had made the UPA government almost immobile.

It is time to go ahead with all reforms with adequate safeguards.
