To know the power of law and its various applications, awareness campaign on laws that protect the rights of women must be intensified, according to Minister of State for Law K. Venkatapathy.

He was delivering a special address at an awareness camp on laws for women rights organised by the Tamil Nadu State Women Commission held here on Sunday.

“Education alone would enlighten and empower women. All girls must be educated and mothers should encourage girls to study well,” the Minister said.

Madras High Court Judge S.K. Krishnan said similar camps should be conducted throughout the State to enable all women use the law. Under Article 15, the government shall not discriminate against any citizen on the ground of sex and Article 15 (3) provides that it can pass special laws in favour of women. Laws were framed not only to extend all the rights enjoyed by men to women but also gave provisions to protect their rights, he said.

Tamil Nadu State Women Commission chairperson K.M. Ramathal said women should be treated as equal to men.

Family Court Principal Judge S. Vimala, said women should voluntarily help other women. “We should help ourselves. If every women takes a decision to help other women, 90 per of women’s problems will be solved immediately,” she said.
