Caught in the rain a man runs for cover in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. BHUBANESWAR: Formation of a low pressure area often triggers panic among people in coastal Orissa, but the atmospheric system detected by Meteorological Department over Bay of Bengal on Sunday has brought cheers among farming community in the State. Dry spell during preceding last four weeks had made farmers frightened. They apprehended that if it did not rain in next seven days, they could witness sprout. Under the influence of the low pressure area the rain was reported to be widespread. As per the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre, the capital city received 37.7 mm of rain since the morning while at the coastal town of Puri the rainfall was recorded to be at 29 mm. Western Orissa towns of Bolangir and Bhawanipatna received substantial rain from Sunday morning. As heavy rain lashed over the city, several low lying areas were filled up with water. Among others Satbadi Nagar, a few pockets of old town area, Rasulgarh and Acharya Vihar saw gushing rainwater flowing through the locality. However, there was no report of damage. The heavy downpour also turned the Master Canteen square a pool of water for an hour. Meanwhile the met office said latest satellite imageries and synoptic observations indicated that a low pressure area had formed over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal. It predicted rain or thundershower at most places over South Orissa and many places over North Orissa during the next 24 hours.
