MADURAI: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has in an interim order restrained the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC, Madurai Division) from collecting excess fare of 50 paisa over and above the prescribed charge in the city buses operated through Arasaradi. According to Consortium for Consumer Justice executive trustee K.Muthiah, the Forum admitted a complaint filed by M.Piravi Perumal who had stated that the TNSTC collected excess fare last year citing construction works at Ellis Nagar over bridge. However, even after the bridge was opened in May 2008, the Corporation collected the extra fare despite pleas from the commuters. The TNSTC had, under the Right To Information Act 2005, admitted that there was no G.O. for enhancement of the bus fares, but stated that steps had been taken with the Regional Transport Authorities to fix new stage. They also informed that the TNSTC cannot independently fix the fare without Government permission. Hence, the Forum passed an interim order restraining from collecting excess fare until further orders.
