NEW DELHI: Four alleged auto-lifters have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police. A dozen stolen vehicles, forged documents and Rs.1.25 lakh have been seized from the accused. The Crime Branch found out that a person named Roop Narain lodged a false complaint with the Nangloi police regarding theft of a vehicle he had bought on finance and then got it re-registered with the Gurgaon Transport Authority to dispose of it to make up for the financial loss. Further investigations revealed that Roop was part of an organised gang that got vehicles registered with transport authorities on non-existent addresses. Acting on a tip-off that some of the gang members would assemble near Vishwa Shanti Stupa on July 16, the police laid a trap and arrested three of them, identified as Roop Narain, Ricky Madan, Chander Shekhar, Bhagat Singh. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that Ricky worked as a tout at the Gurgaon Transport Authority. He would get details of vehicles supplied by Chander Shekhar inserted in the registers of the Authority, said the police. The police said Chander Shekhar used to get stolen vehicles from his distant relative and auto-lifter Pawan Verma. At his instance, Pawan used to get the engine and chassis number of the vehicles tampered with to evade detection, the police added. Accused Bhagat Singh had also disposed of stolen vehicles in Mathura.
