3 held, knives, bullets and chemical substances seized

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: Police on Sunday arrested three men and seized a couple of knives, 32 rounds of live bullets and some chemical substances. The men, police said, had allegedly planned to attack a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor of Madambakkam town panchayat.

Briefing reporters, police said members of the special team under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, St. Thomas Mount, arrested A. L. Babu (35), Veeraperumal (27) and Jeevanandam (21) near Medavakkam early on Sunday following a tip-off that one of them had weapons. The men were handed over to the Selaiyur police station.

The knives, bullets and chemical substances were recovered from them. The ammunition resembled .22 bullets, but whether they were original or countrymade could be confirmed only after forensic tests. The chemical substances too would be sent for analysis, police said.

On interrogation, the three men are reported to have conspired to attack L. S. S.Mohan, DMK councillor from Ward No. 14, police said. Mr. Mohan is the husband of Malliga, chairman of Madambakkam town panchayat and councillor from neighbouring Ward No. 15.

One of the three men had attempted to encroach upon 1.5 acres belonging to the Madambakkam town panchayat and had also built huts on the land. The local body, armed with instructions from the Kancheepuram district administration, removed the encroachments in June last year and once again a few months later when illegal structures were built.

In his complaint lodged with the Selaiyur police station, Mr. Mohan said the three men had planned to attack him as he was resisting attempts by encroachers to usurp the piece of land earmarked for public purpose. He said the town panchayat had planned to develop a park and had also resolved to spend Rs.4.5 lakh from its general funds for the project.

Police said that three men were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act. Babu and Jeevanandam are local functionaries of Pattali Makkal Katchi in Madambakkam and Kamarajapuram.
