MADURAI: The State government is likely to reduce the syllabus of Class X soon following consistent representations from teachers and students. It is expected to happen before the quarterly examinations in September. Before that there would be a ‘careful examination’ of the syllabus by an expert committee.

“I want to get Class X (State Board) syllabus of all subjects examined at the earliest because there are appeals to delete the tough portions, particularly in science and mathematics,” Thangam Thennarasu, Minister for School Education, told The Hindu on Sunday.

He said that the committee would be constituted in a few days after consulting Secretary for School Education M. Kutralingam.

“I would like to hasten the process so that the announcement about syllabus can be made in time. I am for reducing the syllabus if students’ pleas are correct.”

Mr. Thennarasu said that requests and representations for easy syllabus for Class X had been coming since last year. “I want the committee to come out with recommendations within a particular timeframe,” he said

He indicated that the School Education Department would be convening a ‘brainstorming session’ to discuss all issues related to both SSLC and Plus Two examinations.

Association’s plea

Detailed representations on reducing the Class X syllabus had been submitted to the Director of School Education indicating the chapters that need to be removed in mathematics and science, according to the office-bearers of Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachers’ Association.
