TAKING STOCK: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi chairing a meeting on the security arrangement in the State at the Secretariat in Chennai on Sunday. CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has instructed the police to provide adequate security arrangements and ensure safety in wake of threat perceptions indicating a series of explosions in Tamil Nadu. At a meeting of top police officials, he took stock of the situation and reviewed the security measures taken in the State. Director-General of Police K.P. Jain was present. “The Chief Minister has directed the police to make foolproof bandobust and enhance vigil on vital installations and places of worship facing threat,” a senior police official said. Heightened security environment remained in all major temples and establishments in all districts amidst fears of terrorist attacks. “We have strengthened security by mobilising forces from the Tamil Nadu Special Police battalions and Home Guards. Police presence has been enhanced to instil confidence among the people,” Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), K. Vijay Kumar told The Hindu on Sunday. In Chennai, ADGP and Commissioner R. Sekar visited the Kapaleeswarar temple at Mylapore and reviewed the security there. “Private security personnel at shopping malls and major private establishments have been sensitised. Intensive vehicle checks and patrolling in vulnerable areas is continuing,” he said. Police sources said tight security arrangements were in place at major temples in Madurai, Srirangam and Chidambaram. At the Meekanshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai, speed-dome cameras were installed on majestic towers. Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan said a special control room was opened to monitor the situation. All devotees and temple staff were subjected to through frisking. Besides metal detectors, sleuths of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad were deployed.
