Thiruvananthapuram: The police have asked people to report objects found abandoned in public places in view of the threat Kerala is believed to be facing from the extremist “Indian Mujahideen.” The ultra organisation had claimed responsibility for the recent blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad. People can call 100, 1090 (Crime Stopper), 0471-3243000 (police helpline), 0471-3244000, 0471-3245000 or 9846 100100 (highway alert) to report any suspicious activity, the police said. An anonymous person using an “untraceable” Internet telephone conveyed the threat to a television channel in Bangalore. The caller claimed to be from Pakistan said bombs would go off in Kerala at 7 p.m. on Sunday. The public should specifically look for abandoned flower pots, bags, lunchboxes, radios, covered plastic buckets, parcels, vehicles (bicycles, cars and motorbikes) and suitcases. There was no cause for panic and the threat could be a hoax. The police ordered closure of cinema halls in Kochi and Kozhikode. In Thiruvananthapuram, they asked exhibitors to screen slides urging people to be wary of strangers and abandoned objects. They have asked hospitals, including those in the private sector, to be prepared to handle casualties. Ambulances and earthmoving equipment have been pressed into service. The Fire and Rescue Services is in a high state of preparedness. Neighbourhood watch groups have been alerted.
