NEW DELHI: M.R. Venkatesh defeated Canada’s Nikolay Noritsyn to share the top spot with two others after the eighth and penultimate round of the Canadian Open chess tournament in Montreal on Saturday. Second seeded Ukrainian Alexander Moiseenko and Frenchman Matthieu Cornette won their games to join Venkatesh in the lead at six points. In the only decisive first round match of the eight-woman North Urals Cup in Krasnoturinsk, Russia, defending champion and top seed K. Humpy crashed to a surprise loss for former world champion Antoaneta Stefanova in 46 moves. In Copenhagen, International Masters Aswin Jayaram and Tania Sachdev ended their campaign in the 10-round Politiken Cup with 6.5 points after losing their last round games. There was a six-way tie for the title at eight points. The results (involving Indians): Canadian Open (eighth round): Nikolay Noritsyen (Can, 5) lost to M. R. Biel Masters (sixth round): R. B. Ramesh (4.5) drew with Aleksandar Kovacevic (Srb, 4.5); Udi Weisbuch (3) lost to N. Srinath (4). Politiken Cup (10th round): Lars Schandorff (Den, 7.5) bt Tania Sachdev (6.5); Oliver Kurmann (Sui, 7.5) bt Aswin Jayaram (6.5); (ninth round): Aswin bt J. Aambling-Thomsen (Den, 5.5); Tania bt P.
