Maheswaran beats Akash

CHENNAI: P. Maheswaran (22), a second year MCA student from SRM College, scored a win against 12-year-old G. Akash in the penultimate round of the third S.K. Narasimhan memorial FIDE-rating chess tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.

Fourth seed Maheswaran and second seed R. Ashwath are in joint lead with 8.5 points each. The 11th and final round will be played on Monday. Both Maheswaran and Ashwath play black against Kaushik and Shantharam.

S. Kaushik, a 12-year-old, and top seed Ram S. Krishnan are behind the leaders with eight points each. FIDE Master K.V. Shantharam of Indian Bank is in fifth place with 7.5.

In the penultimate round, Ashwath overcame Venkat Sundaram in 24 moves with the black pieces from a Ruy Lopez, Steinitz variation. The 17-year-old Ashwath’s knowledge of opening helped.

Earlier, in the morning, Ashwath turned down a third move draw offer from Maheswaran but when he realised that the position was equal after 17 moves, he himself proposed and got the draw. “I prepared to face the Grunfeld opening, but he played the Modern Benoni,” said Ashwath.

Important results: 10th round: Venkat Sundaram 7 lost to R. Ashwath 8.5, P. Maheswaran 8.5 bt G. Akash 7, S. Bharath 7 lost to Ram S. Krishnan 8, K. Gopalakrishnan 6.5 lost to S. Kaushik 8, Venkata Krishna 6.5 lost to K.V. Shantharam 7.5, V. Subramanian 7 drew with Austin Samson 7, Ajay Srikanth 7 bt M. Swaroop 6, Abhilash Reddy 7 bt A. Manickavelu 6.

Ninth round: Ashwath drew with Maheswaran, Venkat Sundaram drew with S. Bharath, Ram S. Krishnan bt J. Saranya.
