Create bird sanctuary

The boom in the aviation sector is a major threat to birds, most of them on the verge of extinction, as they are kept at bay from places near airports. Also, ponds, lakes, rivers and paddy fields are vanishing, shrinking the habitat of water birds. It is pathetic to see water birds crowding at the fish markets at Palayam, Perrorkada and other places to feed on fish waste.

Hence, the Charachira pond must be made a sanctuary for native water birds to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary will attract students and scholars for study and research. It will be an asset for posterity.

Fruits, especially mangoes, sold in various parts of the city are artificially ripened using calcium carbide, which, as also other ripening agents, causes health problems, such as stomach and liver ailments. The health authorities should check this practice and punish those guilty of doing it. A random check should be carried out in various fruit shops across the district.

The removal of platform-ticket-vending machines from two terminals of the Central Railway Station is causing a lot of trouble to people. They have to wait in long queues to buy platform tickets. The authorities should consider reinstalling the machines and opening a counter at the main terminal exclusively for platform tickets.
