‘Declare Kaginele, Nandagad as national monuments’

HUBLI: Energy Minister K.S. Eshwarappa has urged the Union Government to declare Kaginele in Haveri district, the “karmabhoomi” of saint poet Kanakadasa, and Nandagad in Belgaum district where freedom fighter Sangolli Rayanna was hanged, as “national monuments”.

He was addressing a gathering after performing “bhoomi puja” for installation of a statue of Sangolli Rayanna and inaugurating the Dharwad district unit of Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Hitarakshana Samiti here on Sunday.

Seer of Moorusavira Math Gurusiddha Rajayogindra swamiji was present.

Mr. Eshwarappa said the Government was committed to developing Kaginele and Nandagad.

Kuruba community members were being misled by some vested interests, the Minister said and added that he would expose such people soon. Mr. Eshwarappa said that Kanakadasa and Sangolli Rayanna were models not only to the community but to the entire State.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar urged the people not to restrict great personalities to particular a caste or region.

Pralhad Joshi, MP, said Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was instrumental in releasing funds for the development of Kaginele.

Mr. Joshi said that there was a need to create awareness on the struggle and sacrifice made by Sangolli Rayanna.

He also promised financial assistance to the samiti if it would construct a community hall in the name of the freedom fighter.

Welfare

President of the Karnataka Kurubara Sangha Raghunath Malkapure said that welfare of the community members was possible only by strengthening the organisation.

HDMC councillor Shivanand Muttannavar made introductory remarks. Shanthanna Kadivala presided over the function. Mayor Radhabai Sapare,

Deputy Mayor Chandrashekhar Managundi, MLAs Chandrakanth Bellad and Virabhadrappa Halaharavi, and Janata Dal (Secular) leader Aravind Dalavai were among those present.

Earlier, a procession was taken out.
