Fall in demand for diesel

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Petroleum outlets in the city witnessed reduced demand for diesel on Sunday after a week-long scarcity triggered by power crisis.

Even while several outlets ran out of diesel stock on Sunday, diesel was still available in many of the fuel stations.

An Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) outlet on Hosur Road in Koramangala that had reported a huge demand for diesel last week saw the demand going down on Sunday.

“We had sold close to 20,000 litres of diesel on Thursday and Friday, but we sold only around 8,000 litres of diesel on Sunday. Probably rainfall during the last couple of days has brought down demand for diesel,” the outlet proprietor said.

Vice-president of the Akhila Karnataka Federation of Petroleum Traders B.R. Ravindranath told The Hindu that the petroleum companies had ensured supply to Bangalore since Saturday.

A release from IOC on Saturday said that during the last four days, diesel supply to the outlets in the city has been 9,500 KL, showing a growth of 80 per cent over the previous year’s average sales during July. For the entire State, the supplies have been 45 per cent over the same period last year.

Mr. Ravindranath said that the demand could further go down if the rainfall continues. “However, we have to wait and watch on Monday for the exact nature of demand,” he added.

Withdrawn

It is learnt that the oil companies that had imposed a quota system on diesel supply to the outlets withdrew it on Thursday following a meeting of oil companies.
