This Day That Age
The situation in West Asia contained all the elements of “explosion and danger” and would remain at the “danger point” as long as foreign powers continued to stay in Lebanon, Jordan and other areas of the region, said Prime Minister Nehru at a press conference in Calcutta on July 27. While there was some softening of the situation and “no possibility of war overnight,” Mr. Nehru stressed that the West must recognise Arab Nationalism as a dynamic force, which could not be thwarted by a military approach evident in the Baghdad Pact. Instead of ensuring security, the Pact had brought “troubles and disruption” in its wake in the region. Referring to the proposed Summit conference, Mr. Nehru said that its outcome would depend on the “intentions” of the attending powers.
