Koirala to attend SAARC Summit

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Girija Prasad Koirala, along with a 35-member delegation, would represent Nepal at the 15th SAARC Summit in Sri Lanka.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) is against the decision as Koirala's resignation has been approved by President Ram Baran Yadav. The Maoists have said “a caretaker government cannot represent the country at the summit.” The Constitution mandates the head of state represent the country at summits. Earlier, the kings used to participate in such events. Foreign Secretary Gyan Prasad Acharya had earlier said Mr. Koirala would attend the summit in case a new government was not formed.

Jha's explanation sought

The Supreme Court on Monday has asked newly-elected Vice-President Paramananda Jha to submit an explanation for taking the oath of office in Hindi. A writ petition was filed against Mr. Jha by an advocate, Bal Krishna Neupane.
