Earthmover scare

Now that many roads are being repaired in Tiruchi, often earthmovers are moving at breakneck speed on roads. The shovel swings 2 to 3 feet on either side. It is very scary! Will the authorities fix a speed limit for these earthmovers.

Matchbox cheating

The price of a matchbox has gone up from 50 paise to 100 paise. Previously, each box contained 60 sticks and, later, 50. Now it has only 40 sticks. So the price of each stick is 2.5 paise. Invariably a box contains 2 to 3 sticks less than the stipulated number or some of them are broken and unusable. On an average, the manufacturer makes about 5 paise extra for every matchbox. This is unfair. If 50,000 boxes are made per day, he gets an additional profit of Rs. 2,500. It is illegal. Will the authorities look into this matter?

Erratic water supply

Drinking water supply is erratic in Golden Rock zone of the corporation. Residents of Vasantha Nagar, Cauvery Nagar, etc., go without supply for many days in a month and have to buying water from private suppliers. The Corporation should take steps for regular supply of water in these areas. The Corporation should also take steps to set right the only public handbore pump which remains out of order for a long time at Vasantha Nagar.

Open urinal on temple road

The condition of sanitation in Amma Mandapam Road leading to Srirangam Sri Rangathaswamy Temple is very bad. The 100-metre stretch from the compound wall of the municipal water tank is used by people as an open urinal. Women crossing that area feel very bad. Will the civic authorities construct toilets with sufficient water.

G. Venkataraman,

Srirangam.

Power backup needed at post offices

The two-hour daily power cut has affected the functioning of post offices. The computers go off, causing hardships to the people. Why cannot post offices be provided with a UPS which will not cost much? By providing power back-up, the service will stay uninterrupted.

T.M. Renganathan,

Srirangam.

Minibuses

If minibuses are allowed to be operated between Milagupaarai and Poongudi via Vannan Koil, it will be helpful for people. Drivers are willing to operate. Will the authorities do the needful?

Stray cattle, dog threat

Stray cattle and dogs are moving freely in Subramaniapuram and surrounding areas, posing a threat to the people returning home late at night. I request the authorities to take necessary steps.

More trains, please

Pudukottai, Karaikudi, Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram are fast-growing towns.

There is only one day passenger train and only one night express train from Rameswaram to Tiruchi and Chennai.

The bus fare is high on these routes. I request the Railways to introduce more trains.

Parambai R.S. Prakasam,

Somarasampettai.

Road level higher

The authorities pave the roads, raising its level above the floor height of the houses. As a result, rain water flows into the houses. It is better if the roads are paved after digging the earth to maintain the existing level.

R. Pichai Pillai,

Karumandapam.

Make 139 toll-free

Indian Railway Catering Tourism Corporation had introduced phone 139 for reservation-related enquiries. As the Railways earn a lot and make a good profit every year through the reservation of journey tickets, the calls to the above phone should be made toll-free and access to that number should be allowed to mobile phones which would be a boon to the travelling public. A toll-free number should be introduced for SMS to get the PNR status.

C. Ramalingam,

Woraiyur.

Shun plastic bags

Before the advent of plastic, we went to markets with our own bags. Now shopping malls and vegetable vendors provide us bags. Every drain is blocked with these plastic bags. Local bodies pass resolutions prohibiting plastic bags with no effect. Unless and until the general public make it a habit to carry bags, there is no use in complaining.

S. Sivaraman,

Srirangam.

Set up more counters at SETC

Services at the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) reservation centre at Tiruchi Central bus stand are far from satisfactory. Distribution of reservation slips and reservation of tickets are done at the same counter. The queue gets disturbed and unnecessary quarrels take place. Passengers also have to wait for a long time. Tiruchi is a big city in the centre of the State. Everyday, countless number of passengers are coming to the bus stand. Why can’t the transport authorities construct a beautiful building for reservation and open several counters.

S. Rajagopal,

O.F.T. Estate.

No unscheduled power cuts, please

In Srirangam, the power cut as per schedule is between 6 to 7 a.m. and 12 to 1 p.m. But unscheduled power cuts are indeed taking a much heavier toll with time ranging from half an hour to three hours in the day time and even from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. there will be power cuts. With very little options before the State Government, people will have to definitely accept power holiday, but lack of a courteous response and indiscriminate power cuts should be dealt with appropriately. I request the EB to adhere to the schedule.

J. Anantha Padmanabhan,

Srirangam

Response

This is with reference to the Reader’s Mail (The Hindu, July 22) under the heading ‘Do away with condition’. Airports Authority of India had licensed management of vehicle parking and collection of charges to an agency after calling tenders. The conditions given in the tickets were also part of the system. However, shelter for two-wheelers is a genuine requirement and will be taken up. Parking of vehicles outside the designated parking area is not permissible on security point.

With reference to another letter ‘Give air connectivity’ in the same column, I would like to state that at present, there is a flight to Thiruvananthapuram from Tiruchi. We had already requested the Airlines to connect Kochi either on domestic or international operations. This will be through in three months.

S. Sreekumar,

Airport Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Tiruchi.
