APSRTC has been in the news for acquisition of new buses adding to its fleet. It also has won fuel efficiency awards at the national level. However, its operations in the city have lot of scope for improvement. Many residential colonies close to the National Highway have been complaining that there is no direct bus to take them to the railway station. Another aspect is maintenance of buses. Most of them emit smoke beyond normal limits. On Monday afternoon, a bus which halted at the TB Hospital Junction, could not resume its journey for a long time. The bus on route no. 100 Maddilapalem depot was going towards Rama Talkies side, but broke down in the middle of the road, resulting in all the vehicles queuing behind it from the Seethammadhara side, coming to a halt. The traffic was choked to such an extent between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., it took nearly half-an-hour for a vehicle to cross the TB Hospital Junction due to the avoidable mistake. The APSRTCcould have at least engaged men to push the bus across the highway and moved it aside for the rest of the traffic to clear. Changing timesA wristwatch is no more an instrument to mark time. Gone are the days when the watch given by father after passing an examination or a creditable performance is the only ‘time machine’ one possessed. Now youth - both boys and girls on the fast track - see it as a statement of fashion and attitude. An ensemble of watches appears to be the in-thing. While one watch goes with the college attire, a trendier one is in place for shopping and cinema. For a party, perhaps a funky one is what the style conscious look for. Though so many watches are around, it is a different matter the cell phone often comes handy to find time as one talks his/her heart out. (Prabhakkar Sharma and G.V.Prasada Sarma)
