Civic body staff told not to pick up calves, pregnant animals

NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra has announced constitution of a seven-member panel of councillors to probe alleged irregularities in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s drive against stray cattle in the city.
Addressing a meeting of the MCD House, Ms. Mehra said the civic body staff should not pick up calves or pregnant animals while conducting the court-decreed drive.
The Mayor asked MCD Commissioner K. S. Mehra to ensure that cattle from rural villages as well as temples are not impounded.
She also ordered a probe into allegations of irregularities in micro-chipping of cattle aimed at preventing them from coming back on the streets.
Councillors cutting across party lines accused the civic body officials of behaving inhumanely while impounding stray cattle, packing the animals in trucks and separating cows and calves.
They complained that instead of impounding animals roaming on crowded streets the MCD staff pick up cattle from homes, temples and ashrams to make up the number.
