CHENNAI: The Development Commissioner for Handlooms, New Delhi, has sanctioned Rs.1.12 crore to the Handlooms and Textiles Department for organising 25 district-level exhibitions, two special exhibitions and a national expo, from July to February next. The Department will also conduct at least four special exhibitions during the Deepavali season in Chennai and three outside the State. “The idea is to cover all the important festivals during this period and create awareness among the consumers of the latest designs and varieties of fabrics produced in the handloom sector. The events will also provide them an opportunity to buy genuine handlooms products from different parts of the State under one umbrella,” R. Jaya, Director of Handlooms and Textiles, told The Hindu. District-level and special exhibitions will be held for a minimum of two weeks. The first district-level expo started in Coimbatore last week, and the last one will be held at Dindigul by the second week of February. The Centre has allotted Rs.2 lakh each for the district-level exhibitions and Rs.8 lakh each for special exhibitions that will be conducted in Coimbatore and Nagercoil during Pongal and New Year. A sum of Rs.38 lakh has been allotted for the national exhibition scheduled for March in Chennai. “Last year, we earned Rs.16.24 crore, and this year we have set a sales target of Rs.25 lakh per centre,” Ms. Jaya said.
