JAIPUR: The Jhunjhunu Municipal Council in Rajasthan recently released a 17-point document providing information about its functioning as well as that of its constituent wings, under the Right To Information Act (RTI), 2005. Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA) that works for promotion of participatory governance at the grassroots level, assisted the municipal body in divulging vital facts about itself for the benefit of the public at large. PRIA’s programme officer on right to information, Ahmed Tahrim, said here that the Jhunjhunu Municipal Council’s initiative would facilitate the participation of local people in running the urban local body. “The legal sanctity of the document will give a real sense of power to the public,” he added. Earlier, the panchayat samitis at Govindgarh, Sapotra and Alsisar, village panchayats at Bhuteda, Anantpura-Chimanpura, Salempur and Luna, and the Karauli Municipal Council in the State had released similar information about themselves with PRIA’s help. Jaipur to follow suitMr. Tahrim said PRIA would shortly release a draft document under the RTI for the Jaipur Municipal Corporation to enable the State’s biggest local self-government body to disclose the facts about itself to the public and bring transparency to its functioning.
