Democracy depraved

Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, in his article “Democracy drugged, debauched and depraved” (July 28), has most strikingly described the unruly proceedings in the Lok Sabha, convened by the Prime Minister to seek a trust vote. The pandemonium and anarchy which prevailed during the two days’ proceedings left a very bad impression about the functioning of our parliamentary democracy. MPs cutting across party lines made a mockery of the proceedings.

Justice Iyer has recounted the Lok Sabha proceedings with anguish. He has been impartial in reprimanding both the ruling coalition and the Opposition. Although as an individual the Prime Minister is a man of integrity, his image has been dented thanks to coalition compulsions.

The impressive article should serve as an eye-opener to all those who shed crocodile tears over the ‘murder of democracy.’ As aptly pointed out, the prevention of Dr. Singh from delivering his speech by the use of noise terrorism was pathetic.

What happened in the Lok Sabha was a reflection of voter apathy, which results in such leaders getting elected. It is time the electorate woke up to the danger and exercised its right conscientiously.

No doubt Parliament has seen grand debates and eloquent speeches in the past. But over a period of time, their standards have deteriorated.

But judicial intervention is no solution to the issues thrown up in the legislature.
