Corrections and clarifications

The tenth paragraph in a report “Maharashtra, hub of Gujarat terror strikes” (July 29, 2008) was “Raziuddin Nasir, a SIMI operative who was arrested for planning terror strikes in Bangalore and Goa last year, reported meeting both Ansari and Sheikh at a Lashkar office in Pakistan.” It was an error. The reference here to Sheikh should have been to Zulfikar Fayyaz Kagzi who is referred to in the earlier paragraph — he is a Maharashtra-based SIMI bomb-maker.

A sentence in the second paragraph of “Metro terrorism” (Editorial, July 28, 2008) was “In 2004, India proscribed the production of nitroglycerine- based high explosives, commonly known as TNT or dynamite.” TNT and dynamite are not the same thing. Both are high explosives and there is no other similarity between them. While dynamite is an absorbent mixture soaked in nitroglycerin, and then compacted into a cylindrical shape, TNT is a specific chemical compound called 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene.

The editorial “Equity in primary education” (July 28, 2008) gave the expansion of UNESCO as the United Nations Education, Social and Cultural Organisation. It should have been the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation.

A sentence in the first paragraph of “Moving ahead with post” (Editorial, July 26, 2008) was “As the Eleventh Planning Commission notes, the revenue deficits have come down from 52 per cent in 1999 to 24 per cent in 2005.” It was an error. The reference should have been to the Eleventh Plan.
