NEW DELHI: K. Humpy scored a much-needed victory over veteran Swede Pia Cramling to open her account in the third round of the fifth North Urals Cup women’s chess tournament at Krasnoturinsk, Russia, on Tuesday. The top seed broke Pia’s resistance after the players tested each other on the queenside of their Anti-Meran game lasting 45 moves. The other three boards ended in draws. In the Dutch Open at Dieren, Holland, Sandipan Chanda moved to the joint third spot after beating Australia’s Aleksandar Wohl. In the Biel Masters, at Biel, Switzerland, youngster N. Srinath upstaged local International Master to reach five points from seven rounds. However, Grandmaster R.B. Ramesh suffered a loss. The results: North Urals Cup (third round): K. Humpy (1) bt Pia Cramling (Swe,0.5); Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 2) drew with Antoaneta Stefanova (Bul, 2.5); Xu Yuhua (Chn, 2) drew with Anna Muzychuk (Slo, 1); Natalia Pogonina (Rus, 1) drew with Marie Sebag (Fra, 2). Dutch Open (sixth round, involving Indians): Sriram Jha (4) lost to Vyacheslav Ikonnikov (Rus, 5); Aleksandar Wohl (Aus, 3.5) lost to Sandipan Chanda (4.5). Biel Masters (seventh round, involving Indians): R.B. Ramesh (4.5) lost to Christian Bauer (Fra, 5.5); N. Srinath (5) bt Markus Klauser (Sui, 4).
